HOUSING ACCOMMODATIONS
Georgia State University provides a climate of equal opportunity to all programs, activities and services, and is in full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as amended in 2008 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. University Housing provides accessible housing for students with disabilities, including those that impact emotional and/or mental health. Students seeking disability accommodations must provide supporting documentation from a licensed, qualified health care professional demonstrating that (i) they have a disability, which is a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity, and (ii) a reasonable accommodation is necessary to afford the student equal access to University Housing facilities. This process includes accommodations for Assistive Animals (also known as service animals or emotional support animals (ESAs)). View detailed policies and procedures pertaining to Assistive Animals.
Step 1: Submit a University Housing Application
A student must have an active and completed housing application on file for the applicable term(s). The application is accessible via the MyHousing portal. Students requesting housing accommodations must adhere to all University Housing policies, procedures and deadlines. To receive full consideration for on-campus housing accommodations, students must submit all required applications and requests within the time limits established by University Housing. Be sure to indicate need for accommodations in the housing application.
Step 2: Submit the Registration Form and Supporting Documentation
To request housing accommodations, submit the completed Registration Form and supporting documentation to the Access and Accommodations Center (AACE). The documentation should provide information sufficient to allow AACE to determine (i) whether the student has a disability and (ii) whether the accommodation sought is relevant to the life functions impaired by the student’s disability and will provide the student with equal access to University Housing. Once all required forms are submitted and reviewed, AACE will contact the student about their housing accommodation request and schedule a Welcome Meeting to commence the interactive process, an informal dialogue between AACE and the student about the student’s disability and how it impacts their access to Housing.
If a student has other housing needs not related to a disability, they should contact University Housing by email, by phone at 404-413-1800, or virtual appointment.
Step 3: Review the Submission Deadline
Documentation may be submitted at any time; however, the university recommends submitting the Registration Form on or before the following dates for the appropriate semester that the student will first move into on-campus housing. Timely submission allows the university to consider the student's housing accommodation when processing room assignments. After the submission deadline date, the university may not be able to meet a student’s approved accommodation. University Housing is assigned first come, first served; therefore, the ability to provide approved accommodations is based on availability and waitlist number (if applicable).
Submission Deadlines
Semester | Continuing Student Deadline | New Student Deadline |
Summer Session | April 1 | May 1 |
Fall Semester | March 15 | June 1 |
Spring Semester | November 15 | November 15 |
If a student submits documentation after the deadline date indicated above, the student will be assigned to an appropriate room assignment as quickly as possible when an acceptable space can be determined.
The reasonable accommodation takes effect once the determination is made based on the space available. Documentation cannot be submitted for a future semester without having the room assignment for the current semester updated. Once a determination is made, the student's room assignment will be updated.
Step 4: Await a Decision
AACE will review the information submitted by the student and consult with University Housing to determine the appropriate reasonable accommodation.
The student will be informed whether their accommodation request has been granted or denied, if a change in room assignment is appropriate and whether any changes or adjustments to room rate charges apply. The accommodation will be applied immediately and will stay active on the student's account.
AACE will identify approved housing accommodations by issuing a Housing Accommodation Letter during a scheduled appointment with the student. AACE’s approval of housing accommodations does not override the policies of any particular agency, office or department. University Housing will implement the accommodation, which is subject to room availability per a student’s room assignment or waitlist number.
Students who believe that an eligibility or accommodation decision made by AACE was the result of procedural error, substantive error or bias may appeal the decision in writing to Georgia State’s ADA/Section 504 Coordinator ([email protected]) within 10 business days of the date of the decision. Click here to view instructions for appeals from disability accommodation decisions. Students who believe that they have been discriminated against on the basis of disability should contact the ADA Coordinator at [email protected] or submit an incident report to Equity & Civil Rights Compliance.
Room Rate Charged
When a student receives a Housing disability accommodation, the rate charged for the student’s room depends on which room the student selects from available housing options that meet the specifications of their accommodation and/or whether a student receives a preference to live in a certain type of room or housing area on campus. The student will be informed of housing options and applicable room rates.
Housing Option Determination
An accommodation may require a change to a student's housing option, such as changing from a traditional double to a single with a private bathroom if that type of housing is approved and available on the campus. Some buildings may not have availability in or offer the type of housing recommended. If a space is not available in the recommended housing option, the student will be added to the Waitlist and will be reassigned once a vacancy becomes available. Requests for specific housing options or buildings may not be honored.
