Student Success Through Civic Engagement

Many majors or career paths in college require students to have a certain amount of community service hours. Georgia State University Housing offers multiple opportunities for students that live on campus to serve their communities. The aim of University Housing is for students to become more civically engaged and aware of issues in their local community.

There have been various service projects and opportunities in fall 2016. Some of the project sites were Trees Atlanta, Medshare, Boys and Girls Club, Truly Living Well, Books for Africa, local elementary schools and more. Students have been involved in helping the urban forest, packing books for underserved countries in Africa, educating tomorrow’s youth and engaging in urban farming.

Over 331 different residents have gone on these weekend service trips with many going more than once. Based on a recent survey provided to participants of the weekend service, 100% of respondents said they will do service with housing again. Additionally, 100% stated these projects have motivated them to get more involved in civic engagement within the community, and 92% are motivated to try to create a change within the local community.

University Housing residents have completed approximately 1,703 hours of community service this semester. Project site representatives were very appreciative of our residents’ willingness to give back to their communities.

You had a good team to show up to Parklane…Students and grade captains loved them!
